About Pine Bluff:

Pine Bluff is a city located in Jefferson County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 55,085, ranking it as the sixth most populous city in the state. Pine Bluff is the county seat of Jefferson County.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is located here. Pine Bluff is also the home of the Pine Bluff Arsenal, a major site for the demolition of chemical weapons.

Pine Bluff Geography:

Pine Bluff is located at 34°12'60" North, 92°1'23" West (34.216648, -92.023114). Pine Bluff is on the Arkansas River, the community was named for a bluff along the Arkansas River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 121.3 km2 (46.8 mi2). 118.1 km2 (45.6 mi2) of it is land and 3.2 km2 (1.2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 2.65% water.

Pine Bluff Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 55,085 people, 19,956 households, and 13,350 families residing in the city. The population density is 466.3/km2 (1,207.6/mi2). There are 22,484 housing units at an average density of 190.3/km2 (492.9/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 32.30% White, 65.85% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,956 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.7% are married couples living together, 23.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,247, and the median income for a family is $34,362. Males have a median income of $30,766 versus $21,009 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,637. 25.5% of the population and 20.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.0% of those under the age of 18 and 18.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Pine Bluff Economy:

Agriculture is a mainstay in Pine Bluff. Jefferson County is located in the heart of a rich agricultural area in the Arkansas River Basin. The leading products include cotton, soybeans, cattle, rice, poultry, timber and catfish. Principal industries in the area are engaged in processing cotton; production of cottonseed oil, paper and wood products; the manufacture of wire products; poultry processing; the manufacture of electric transformers; and metal fabrication. Major employers are Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Tyson Foods, International Paper, the Pine Bluff Arsenal and Union Pacific Railroad.
